In October, 2016, Dr. Cathy Chovaz was invited to give a keynote address to the 5th World Federation of the Deaf Asia Conference at the NTUC Centre in Singapore.
Dr. Chovaz’s presentation discussed Mental Health and Deaf People: What are the Facts? She described that although the prevalence of mental health disorders appears to be higher in Deaf people across the world, there may also be additional factors involved from the Lived Experience of Deaf (LED). This concept of society imposing significant stressors on Deaf people through communication barriers, inequities in education and employment and other injustices may contribute to a culture-bound syndrome characterized by depression, anger, frustration, anxiety, and hopelessness. There is much research still to be done.
